Your Home Business Tools

James Lowe asked:

Us home business entrepreneurs, who use computers, can improve our personal worth resumes by learning as much as we can about hardware, software and target marketing.

Increasing our knowledge, training and soft and hardware portfolios will make us more effective electronic home business systems folks, saving time and money sharply.

One of the first steps to a more efficient computer and marketing system for your home business is to update your PC or laptop software and hardware constantly as new internet innovations debut. This will keep your computer system marketing tool bag at state of the art level. Internet competition is sharp. Keep your level sharp and you can compete. No exceptions.

Updating and improving software is usually a breeze, with most computer systems and software systems working hand in hand to prompt you to download the upgrades and a one click installation that, with common broadband speed, will complete in a fairly short time.

Some software programs upgrade in the background without your even being aware of it or even noticing any system slow down.

Even if they say it is okay to have other programs open I strongly suggest having no other programs open while you use your computer to download or to work at your home business. Nice and easy to get a good download without serious possible mishaps.

You will have enough unnecessary glitches along the work path as it is.

Your hardware upgrades are a little more difficult to keep track of. A home business owner, who is less than geek level, should find a beginning level computer magazine that will tell the owner the latest products as well as their features and uses.

Always keep your eyes and brain searching for high quality internet and computer people to form working relationships with. Many talented computer programmers are weak at marketing. Learn your marketing and you can have a power business relationship with these people, benefiting you both.

Handy peripherals come along brand new just about every day. Things like Web cams and CD burners can help facilitate a home business with the computer. A talented you who understands target marketing along with your talented computer savvy pal makes for a nice power relationship that can make things click and work for a profit.

Getting online without any interruption, either through broadband or DSL, is important to a computer home business. With all the virus and spyware that needs to be kept updated and used this is not always possible.

To ignore these updates is inviting various internet headaches like virus and spyware pests that can cause severe damage and lots of down time. A Home business owner would not want a consumer getting a busy signal when it is time to call and buy.

Nor would she want to spend quality sales or marketing time waiting for a home business computer to upload. The lesson is clear. If you want to move up and keep up to date, you need to get a DSL line when you can afford it.

Us home business owners do not have to be a security expert but do have to have a complete understanding of the basics of the threats to our sensitive computer systems we depend on to keep our business functioning as smoothly as possible.

We should understand the meaning of irritating and real threats like viruses, Trojan horses, worms, phishing and spoofing. Virus protection, and other common security software is a must for a home business computer. No exceptions.

While the most common security products are Norton and MacAfee there are some free security products that are excellent protection as well. AVG, SpyBot Search and Destroy and AdAware.

Your internet techie buddy can help you focus on the best of these to use. Your usp or DSL or broadband providers can help in this area also.

You owners of home business computers can save a lot of time, energy and repair fees by knowing the up to date ins and outs of computer maintenance and troubleshooting.

Subscribe to a good computer publication and study it well. Search for a geek buddy to team up with.

Can Your Honey Be Your Business Partner?

Steve Roberts asked:

Many couples first met on the job, are involved in family businesses, or find themselves considering working together on something they both love. One of the basics behind success in such ventures is whether they can make it past the hurdle of competing with each other.

First, some personal history. Probably due to very similar personalities, my wife, Pam, and I have almost always been involved in some such joint venture. After marriage we became the volunteer caretakers at a church camp. Then we jointly enrolled in seminary. We were co-pastors for four years. I always like to say that our marriage “survived” those years.

Back then we didn’t have the maturity to know what true cooperation and intimacy was. Whatever she could do I felt I had to do just as well or better. Whatever decision she made I would need to add my critique to. The “shop-talk” at home rarely was put aside. You can imagine what happened to the romance in our marriage!

We got smart at that point and took separate jobs and began separate training in our clinical disciplines. Then the opportunity to work together came around again. For the last ten years we’ve co-directed the Samaritan Counseling & Education Center in Colorado Springs, CO.

At first, I was worried the same old competition would occur. What a pleasant surprise to find that some level of maturity had set in! It was now clear to me that my wife is the perfect “out front” person with true qualities for group organization and leadership.

I was just fine being the “behind-the-scenes” clinician that sat in my office hour after hour seeing clients. She provided the flash and dazzle, while I was the steady presence cranking out therapy and caring for the staff. In other words, we each knew our respective strengths and were emotionally adjusted to being who we were. A few years had made a lot of difference!

And what about now, ten years later? We’re still running the Center, but we also have our own developing businesses on the side. I, of course, have this newsletter, and Pam always proof reads it for me (along with editorial comment!), and she has an equine therapy and education business that I support with many hands-on hours of harnessing horses, moving them from place to place, along with feeding and watering duties.

Competition Vs. Emotional Intimacy

Business together can be a wonderfully unifying couple activity. This is why multi-level-marketing companies always want to make the business a family affair. However, the whole enterprise can founder on the rock of competition.

Competition is fine in its place, such as with business competitors or on the sporting field. But it will kill the emotional intimacy between two lovers. Competition sets up a “win-lose” paradigm. Someone must lose in order for someone to win.

Emotional Intimacy requires vulnerability. If we are vulnerable, it is safe to share ourselves with the other. It is safe to be open with feelings, thoughts, dreams and asperations. Once we start to compete (any kind of argument or heated disagreement), it is no longer safe and our emotional life will shut down.

Most of us first came together because we wanted to be wanted. We wanted another person to want to know us deeply and to appreciate what they found. Unless we are careful, being in business together can kill the very thing that brought us together.

What I have found in my work with couples, is that making decisions by consensus is what almost always works. Competition doesn’t, consensus does. This means making decisions only when both partners can agree. It is inefficient and time consuming, but it is what works.

If you find yourself in ongoing competitive struggles, resolve to get help and to work it through. My experience with my wife suggests it is well worth it. Plus, I find that my work as a counselor with couples in business is some of the most rewarding time I put in.

Are You And Your Honey Going To Be Good Business Partners?

Probably not right away. It takes practice and experience. But this is no reason not to try it. Anything worth doing requires a significant learning curve. How will you ever know if you don’t try it?

One place to try it out with a low entrance fee is to start an online business together. Try an online newsletter, a web site that sells one or many items, or perhaps buying and selling on ebay. See what can interest you both, and see what you can learn about working together on it.

Conclusion

Your project together doesn’t have to be a business. Pam and I spent three years hiking the Colorado Trail together. That’s 470 miles from Denver to Durango! How many people can say they’ve walked from Denver to Durango? Not many. But we have, and it was a great couple building time for the two of us.

So, your project may be business, and it may not be. But the value of an endeavor together, with the personal growth that comes from it, can and probably will, catapult your relationship to new levels of energy, closeness, and maturity.

Business Development For The Private Labeled Bottled Water Industry

July 20, 2008 by Admin · Comments Off

Marcus Stout asked:

The private labeled bottled water industry is exciting with tremendous growth opportunities and the ability for suppliers to offer their customers and strategic partners creative, effective advertising solutions.

But like any business, care is required to develop the business in a profitable way and the best way to do this is to establish a focused business development effort that utilizes the tools and techniques established by successful business.

The first step is to define the concept “business development”.

Definition:

Business development “includes a number of techniques designed to grow an economic enterprise. Such techniques include, but are not limited to, assessments of marketing opportunities and target markets, intelligence gathering on customers and competitors, generating leads for possible sales, follow up sales activity, formal proposal writing and business model design.

Business development involves evaluating a business and then realizing its full potential, using such tools as marketing, sales, information management and customer service. For a sound company able to withstand competitors, business development never stops but is an ongoing process.” (source: Wikipedia)

From this definition it is clear that business development is more than closing the sale and each technique requires detailed planning and follow up.

Using the concepts of business development, our company developed a robust, profitable private label water business but it took considerable initial and continuing effort.

Unique Value Proposition:

Our first challenge was the development of a Unique Value Proposition that answered the question “Why should I buy from you”.

After a review of the market and the competition it was determined that private labeled bottled water was a powerful, cost effective, advertising vehicle but because a customer’s brand was affected, high product quality and customer service was required. Our Unique Value Proposition was established and stated:

“Element H2O will provide powerful and cost effective advertising and brand promotion for its customers based upon the highest quality consumable private label water, label design and customer service.”

Marketing and Target Markets:

Field and internet research was conducted with the basic question being: What are the characteristics of industries are most likely to use our product at a price that is profitable to us. Key characteristics were developed:

• Prospects that provide a quality product or service.

• Industries operating in a competitive market environment where product/service differentiation was critical.

• Prospects that required drinking water for customers, clients or prospects.

• Prospects that maintained a quality brand image.

Initial research indicated that the following industries were initially high potential targets:

• Hospitality (Hotels and Spas)

• Banking

• Mortgage Brokers

• Real Estate

• Ski Resorts

Sales Channels and Market Access:

It was decided that two channels would be used to go to market - direct selling and e-commerce. An e-commerce site was developed that allowed customers to design their own label for the bottles or provide an existing design consistent with the customer brand strategy. Search Engine Marketing and Optimization techniques were used to promote this channel.

A direct sales staff was formed to develop and close sales opportunities and these efforts were supported by a direct mail campaign and networking with local chambers of commerce, local trade associations and lead sharing groups.

The sales effort, after a series of initial false starts and disappointments matured successfully as we reviewed and revised the fine points of our effort.

Product Quality and Customer Service:

Our corporate strategy for all products is to stay at the high end of the market and this was particularly true for private label bottled water where the market is characterized by cutthroat competition and many low quality vendors who are slashing prices and selling on price rather than quality.

We focused on three areas of quality:

• Water purity - we used a steam distillation/ozonation process that guaranteed 99.9% pure water that tasted delicious.

• Label Design Quality - We used an in house professional designer to guarantee label design quality.

• Label Print Quality - We used laminated label stock that was extremely durable and water proof and used digital or flexo printing technology to guarantee quality.

Customer service was particularly important as we established a reputation for delivering on time and correctly. If mistakes occurred, and they did, we adopted a no questions asked guarantee. We established a reputation as a reliable vendor for our customers.

The business became a successful mainstay of our business but only because we developed a planned, business development process that we reviewed constantly and made changes that the market required.

Business Books: The Secret to Getting More Reading Done Every Day

July 15, 2008 by Admin · Comments Off

Steve A asked:

Today, I’ll let you in on a little secret that I use to read at least four business books every month, without taking any additional time out of my day.

Every single successful person I know focuses on learning daily, and it’s no accident. Top business owners know that ongoing education is an absolute necessity.

I don’t mean the kind of education you got in school, in those dusty old college business books that were full of numbers and boring graphs.

I mean a different kind of education that deals more with street smarts, than book smarts.

Did you know that the majority of people will never read a book again after high school? Our education system leaves such a bad taste in people’s mouths. When we are forced to learn, we end up dreading the process, instead of embracing it.

I know that in my own life, it wasn’t until I was out of school that I really started to love learning. I realized one day, that learning wasn’t just for reading, writing, and arithmetic. You could literally learn how to do anything in life.

Whether you wanted to get in shape, become more creative, build wealth, or start a business…it is a learnable skill. With so many great business books out there, it has hard to not get excited about starting my own company.

The process to learning is simple: You start by surrounding yourself with people who know more about the subject than you do. Then you read, listen, and watch everything that they have to teach you. Mimic the best until you reach a level of mastery where you can innovate on your own. That is what great business books teach, and allow you to do.

Once I realized the importance of learning I started trying to read more business books. The problem was that there was never enough time. Sure, I could TRY to read a chapter per day, but the time would be filled each day with something urgent, and the reading would never get done.

I literally had a stack of great business books that I wanted to read, but I wasn’t making much progress.

That is, until one day I discovered a secret to success, which I learned from a man named Brian Tracy. The secret was to start listening to the audio version of business books in my car while I was driving.

You see, every day I had to drive somewhere. There was no way that I could forget to drive, or not have enough time to drive. Every day, I was going to drive somewhere no matter what, so it was built in to my life.

I eventually came to hear of more and more successful people, who ALL followed this strategy. Pretty soon I was going through a book a week on tape. I would even “read” business books while I was at the gym, taking public transit, or flying (so even if you don’t drive, there are still opportunities).

For me, the real beauty of listening to business books on tape is that I get to hear someones voice, and this is how I learn best. It was like I was surrounding myself with these great authors. Everyday, their way of thinking and great outlook on life was changing the way I thought. I heard their voices and ideas so much, it was like they were my personal friends who I couldn’t get away from!

Some people are audio learners, and learn best when hearing someone speak (like me). Some people are visual learners, and learn best when they can SEE the words on the page (I have a different secret for you in my online course). A small percentage of the population are even touch learners, and learn best when moving their body or using their hands.

If you learn well by listening or hearing words in any way shape or form, then audio books are the secret you’ve been missing to start learning more about business every day. And it doesn’t take any additional time!

Life is quite simply too short to spend listening to Britney Spears and Snoop Dogg on the radio. Instead, start getting more reading done then you ever thought possible today by listening to audio business books.

A great first one to listen to is Brian Tracy’s, The Psychology of Achievement, which you can purchase online.

You can get audio books through services such as www.audible.com (the Amazon.com of audio books), which allows you to download MP3’s to burn to CD’s or to use on your MP3 player.

They are often a bit cheaper than the actual book. You can also get audio books for free at your local library, and find some online for free. Finally, I have a handful of friends who also listen to audio books and we always share.

Start listening to business books today, instead of trying (and failing) to read them, and you will automatically start learning at an incredible pace.

Real Solutions When you Have Business Opportunities

Mike asked:

Various books have been written and seminars have been conducted on topics that revolve around the theme – ‘How to become a good entrepreneur?’ various myths have been busted and various new ways have been discussed to turn business opportunities into prospering entities. In this article, we will discuss about the two most important things required for the successful start up of business – 1. the right business opportunities and 2. money to finance it.

As they say, opportunities don’t knock your door, you have to go fetch it. This holds true even in case of business. You may or may not have grand business opportunities. But you can always make business opportunities for yourself. You can turn your area of interest into a business idea. If money is your problem, you can start off at a low scale and then gradually increase it further with more investment of money, time and efforts.

Now comes a very critical aspect of starting a business – finance. There are various things that are required to start off a business. And to finance most of them, you need money. Usually, people save a little before starting off. Some also take up a start up business loan. You can choose either of them. Or you can also select your own way of financing it. There are some businesses which do not require much financing in the beginning, if you start off on a very low scale, like home based businesses.

If you come across excellent business opportunities, it would not be a good idea to let them go just because of inadequate finance. The banks and lending institutes in UK provide the ambitious business persons quite favourable plans in terms of start up business loans. So forget the financial worries and make the most of the business opportunities you come across.

Starting Your Stay At Home Business

July 15, 2008 by Admin · Comments Off

James Lowe asked:

Having a career at home, with no rules but your own, for self development and life satisfaction has been the dream of most moms, and dads for that matter alike, for a long time.

Would you want to work for a demanding, ignorant, incompetent, unsympathetic boss if you have a choice?

The choice being; of staying home and earning the same or more than you would make by time, body and mind slaving in the office, store or factory for 8 to 10 hours a day? Not really? I thought so.

From experience I know that starting a stay at home business can be a bit daunting for most moms and dads.

A lot of people would be intimidated by the thought of not receiving their monthly paycheck and would opt to simply stay with their present job.

This would mean missing Out on the thrill of busting out of their discomfort and unhappy zones.

The other, large side, of the coin is happier and far more exciting though.

Go back over a hundred years ago and think of how you would of felt as one of the Wright brothers, as your paper, cloth and wood plane was lifting off of the ground for the first time for All humanity of all time.

The warm summer sun is shining down on you as you lay on your chest guiding your aircraft. The smell of the warm grassy field fills your lungs as you leave the ground.

A warming comfortable summer breeze is blowing back from the noisy propeller moving so fast the human eye cannot follow it. See the Earth getting farther and farther below you. No one has ever done this before!

Feel the chills in your spine and the adrenaline pumping up your excited heart as you think of all the small, go no where people who told you this was impossible because no one had ever done it before!

Think of where the world would be now if everyone listened to the very little people who say it cannot be done while others are doing it as they speak their tail dragging talk.

While many people would simply not pursue their dream of having a work at home business, there are a few brave souls, like you, who would take the risk of starting out.

Of lifting off the Earth, for the first time, despite the little people saying convincingly that it cannot be done. Hah! For you mom and dad people who are brave enough to pursue your dreams, your first challenge will be to find the right kind of stay at home business that is profitable, enjoyable and exciting.

Do not be satisfied with anything less.

Find these profitable, exciting and enjoyable stay at home businesses as a matter of ingenuity and creativity drives you. Got it? There are no hard and fast rules as to where to get your business ideas. Although the thrilling reality is that they are constantly all around and within you at every moment of your existence. That is, right now.

Many of the most creative business ideas came about through accident so you can never be too specific as to where to find them.

Though remember that they are always all around you.

However, there are places like the Internet, the library and your local trade and industry office or show, which can be wonderful sources of inspiration.

Once you find the right stay at home business, you need to study all its general aspects.

Just because you have a stay at home business does not mean you will not have any competitors.

On the contrary, you will be facing stiff, dishonest and unfair competition from fellow work at home business people and big companies with established commercial offices from day 1.

It is important that you study your competitors well and learn from them.

In business, one of your best teachers is your competitors, so take advantage of their experiences and learn from them. Look at good competitors who do Not fulfill their whole service.

Maybe you can pick up where they left off without competing with them with a new product they did not see when they built theirs.

Before you are ready to start, clear a space in your home where you will set up your center of operations office.

Work with your family and make a plan to have them help you and make them an intricate part of your business. They are sure to help you more effectively.

Give them a defined amount of prime time attention everyday as you will your business.

This will inspire you to do better all the time. They will also help and follow you more this way.

Stay at home businesses need designated office and time space, in your house and family life, where you can organize yourself completely. If you have children, it is better to have a door on your designated office that you can close to keep them from snooping on your work. Let them know exactly why to get maximum cooperation. Having kids running in front of you while you work could be very stressful so make sure that you have a stay at home business area where you can work in peace. Give them small tasks to do to help you, to get maximum cooperation from them. They will respect and love you more for the opportunity to help. It would also be a very good idea to get another telephone line, when you can afford it, which you will designate as your business phone.

You can use that phone number on your business card instead of your house phone.

Having a DSL line, when you can afford it, will help a lot from the beginning because you can talk to prospects, on the phone, while looking up critical information for them on your computer.

Having a business phone will make you sound and be professional and effective.

Business aimed to success. To do list.

Yola Eve asked:

You need to find an ideal way of organizing and supporting your business. You can develop your own style, embrace your inner talents, find “your and only your” way to Success.

Every starting out specialist who is about to organize their own practice wants to be successful right from the start. How to do that? Where to find a perfect way to run private Biz? Does one have to spend years in order to become successful? I would say no to years and multiple business start outs.

Many people want and I say they can run their business perfectly well from the start, while continuing to develop. From my own experience, I went and I have talked to successful people. I learned about their mistakes, I put reminders for myself to achieve more at my starting level. And I did it.

They say that road to Success is hard-work. I would agree on that.

They say that if you are not born as a businessman you have to work hard for years to get the necessary skills. Well, I am not sure about that.

They say, this is my favorite one, that:

“He is just lucky… He has done nothing to obtain what he has already… He has a good karma.” LOL

There is a new tendency that I accepted and followed. I started to develop habits of rich people from the beginning. My business is small and it was only in my own efforts to run it properly. I had no accountants or business advisors in my family. None of my friends had their own ventures. I had nobody to turn to. Nobody could actually give me an idea how to run my business and organize myself successfully. But I have done it anyway. Thanks to the already successful people, psychologist and business trainers who have helped me to bring out the best in me.

I looked at them. I studied them. I worked with them. I did it all in order to fix my internal problems and fear of failure that was passed to me in my childhood. I am sure many people can relate to me. Because, our parents didn’t always know how to teach us in a better way. They were raised by their parents who have given them whatever they could. And sometimes these things are not best to work positively in our lives. Anyway, I worked through my problems, because I really wanted to be successful in my life. I was motivated to create better life for myself, my family and my child.

Everything happened for me the moment I understood that I can be successful and wealthy only if I develop something of my own. Something that works in my life. Something that could help other people to make their lives better.

But how to do that? How to find something of your own? How to develop and implement it in your business?

The search is actually not that long.

You put a goal and ask yourself:

“What is my, and only my, talent?”

The answer will come to you in time. Sometimes it can take a few months, sometimes a few days, sometimes a few minutes for the answer to come to you.

After that, you take another important thing and put it to work. Your faith.

Do you completely believe in yourself? If no, you should work on it. I wouldn’t give any advice here because every person completely differs from another. The answer is within you. The only common suggestion is to visit, once again, a successful and experienced specialist, psychologist, business trainer. Tell them what you need exactly, they will help you out.

Do another thing for yourself. Set a specific time and date for yourself when you want this faith to appear in you and you will be ready to start doing something. Time and date will help you organize yourself better. It will make you move forward faster because you have triggered your subconscious and super conscious mechanism in order to succeed. There is a saying that “If you really want something, the whole Universe will help you to achieve what you want.”

Now, back to our Success Stairs. You have to climb them.

Your fist successful step is to keep track of every work you do throughout a day. Believe with all your heart in everything that you do and list what you were doing in your small achievements To-Do List. That is how you will be able to keep track of what is done and what still needs to be done. That is how you will be able to gain more faith in everything you do.

Learn how to organize yourself. Set deadlines what and when needs to be done, created or finished. Set estimated time for every work that you do. That is a key to successful time management skills.

Make a to-do list of all your services sold to your customers. Create your own client database to keep track of your clients. Communicate with them to get to know their special needs and see if you can fulfill them and implement it in your business.

Put your computer, organizer, to-do list software to work. They will help you organize yourself better, concentrate on what your have to do and in what priority everything needs to be set. Let your organizer be your silent assistant. It will alarm you when you have to do something important step by step.

List your ideas for the future. Remember, you have to write them down. Brilliant ideas come and go. They have a tendency to vanish in our daily routine mind work. That is why your every idea, even crazy one, must be written down on paper or a computer. From my experience, these ideas accumulate and then some of them can bring you “your and only your” true Success.

The Christian Entrepreneur Business Plan

Sam Crowley asked:

The blueprint for a secular business may not include the same inspiration or intent as a Christian business plan. However, a business plan is important to the successful operation of any business. The Christian entrepreneur has to have the same knowledge of basic business principals as a secular business owner. However, the partnerships are very different.

Acquiring an education of basic business principals important to the day-to-day operation of the business. The education in the realm of Christian business principals will empower you to obtain financial independence. You will discover within the pages of the Bible, every resource needed to expand and explode your business profits.

By following the teachings of Jesus, your business can reap all the benefits that you envision for this endeavor. Do not follow or listen to the philosophy that God wants Christians to be poor. This is not the truth that the Bible teaches.

There are many misconceptions concerning the role of wealth in the life of Christians that are received as absolute truth. Do not allow these misconceptions keep you from reaching a high level of success in your business. There are some principals that Christian businesses must follow to receive the blessings of God.

An important part of gaining prosperity or riches is that to continue receiving the blessings of God, the Christian business must also fulfill their commitment by tithing. Some Christian businesses will give lip service to their Christian beliefs until it comes to the actual giving of money.

They will praise the Lord with their mouths but not with their pocket books. When you decide to follow the success principals of the Bible in their unaltered form to acquire abundance, then generosity of spirit in the way of tithing is a major requirement.

Pray about the business and ask God for guidance in selecting and running your business. Ecclesiastes 5:2 (paraphrased) . When you hear the voice of god and obey his voice there are vast benefits awaiting you. Deuteronomy 28:1-14 offers an amazing picture of what God has in store for you when you hear and obey His voice.

Your business and your life will be blessed when God is your partner. The Bible has a clear outline for your life. How much can you accomplish with a clear plan for your life? You will accomplish great things when you embrace the truth of the scriptures for your business venture. There is a surplus in the Kingdom of God. As a result of your partnership with God, you will have freedom from debt. God will show you ways to innovate your business by creating new streams of revenue.

The priests of the Old Testament were millionaires. The priestly tribe of Levi did not share in the abundance that the Promised Land provided. During the reign of Joshua, these priests prospered as a result of the tithe that they received from the children of Egypt. (Joshua 18:7; Numbers 18:21; and Numbers:18:26 .)

There is no benefit in being mediocre. God expects greatness.

At-home Business Retreat - Step-by-step Instructions for This Soul-inspiring Activity

Reggie Odom asked:

How to Have a Successful “Soul” Business Retreat At Home

Are you thriving in your business and having the impact you are meant to have? OR are you being run by it? It is easy to get so caught up in the day-to-day busy-ness of your business that you have little time to envision, plan and create for such things as “thriving” and “impact.” If this is your experience, then it’s time to plan a “soul” business retreat.

An at-home variety of retreat is simple! And it has the added benefits of minimal expense, planning, packing and travel. Plus you get to sleep in the comfort of your own bed each night. Read on to find out how!

What’s a “Soul” Business Retreat?

A “soul” business retreat is a sacred time in which you withdraw or pull back from the ordinary routine of your business, and reconnect with your own essence, that of your business, and what’s most significant. During this time, you focus on key business activities that are guided by passion, purpose, vision and values - it’s time to bring your heart and soul to the fore.

How Do I Prepare?

First things first! Make a decision to do it. Then energize your decision by scheduling it into your planner.

I scheduled my first business retreat as a compromise to scheduling a vacation. My coach was urging me to schedule a vacation in my planner. When I began to unleash all my considerations she stopped me with a wisdom statement: “Just do it.”

While I didn’t schedule the vacation then, in a moment of willingness, I turned

seven-eight months ahead in my planner and highlighted a five-day work retreat in the early fall. Even that took my breath.

The yellow highlighter seemed to have extraordinary powers. A few months later while checking ahead in my planner I saw those glowing neon yellow marks boldly claiming five weekdays. I began to dream.

Closer to the scheduled time, the retreat became an at-home venture. It felt right, and seemed simpler after the traveling I’d done in the previous months.

Prepare For Success!

Some simple preparations before your retreat will help insure that it flows smoothly.

During the month before,? keep the days of your retreat free when scheduling business or other activities.

• Prepare your clients and business associates - schedule them and all else either before or after your retreat.

• Notice what of your work excites you as well as what drains you. Notice what you are secretly longing to do regarding your business that you haven’t seemed to have time for. And take note.

• If you live with others let them know what you will be doing and when. Share with them why this is important to you, let them know what you need from them and ask for their support. Make specific requests - they may not be able to read your mind.

In the week before, you are setting the tone and preparing your physical, mental and spiritual space.

• Clear and clean your retreat space. Better yet, hire someone to do it.

• Make sure you have plenty of newsprint and markers.

• Buy your favorite, healthy, easy to prepare foods and have plenty of fresh water on hand.

• Ask your higher self the question each day, “What is most important for me to focus on during my retreat?”

• Decide your overall intention for the retreat, what your goals are for each day (what you want to accomplish) and write them out. Allow your heart and soul to guide you.

During The Week Of Your Retreat - Keep it Simple and Keep Your Retreat Sacred

• Change your phone message and put an auto responder on your email.

• Unplug your phone and disconnect the sound from your email.

• Exercise, take quiet time, eat well, and get plenty of sleep every day.

• Take rest and refresher periods throughout the day.

• Paper your walls with large sheets of newsprint and plan, play and create on them with markers - it’s amazing how much the large format will free you.

• Take note of inspiration in the form of ideas, dreams or desires.

• Take time to stand back and look around the room to get a bigger view of what you’re accomplishing.

• During free time, read, watch or listen only to what inspires you.

• Have a friend or coach available to check in with you if you feel the need.

• Bring closure to each day and re-order your space for the next day.

• Savor every moment.

• Celebrate your accomplishments!

Oh, and one last thing before your “soul” business retreat is complete: Take out your planner and schedule the next one.

Chances are, you will return to your business refreshed, revitalized and reinspired. To stay that way, incorporate some aspects of the retreat into every day. Integrate your new ideas and expanded vision into your business. And remember the wisdom of Goethe:

“Things that matter most must never be at the mercy of things that matter least.”
